What are the chances of training an adult golden retriever to co-exist with a cat?

RP McMurphy questioned:

Here’s my situation:

I am watching a golden retriever of some friends of ours for several weeks while they get some landscaping work done on their house. They and their three kids have never really paid much attention to the dog, have always kept her outside and I don’t really reckon they want the dog. My hunch is that when their work is done and it’s time for the dog to go home they will question us if we just want to keep her. I wouldn’t mind doing that, but we have an entrenched cat in the house who wouldn’t take kindly to sharing the roost. Also, since she’s spent her whole life outdoors (5 years or so) I’m wondering if there’s any chance I could “domesticate” her so she could stay indoors.

Any help / thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks.
Thanks everybody for your thoughts. This dog is certainly a sweetheart, I make it a point to play fetch with her for an hour or so a day and she absolutely likes it. I reckon I will bring her in and place her in her crate and see what happens. Right now the cat keeps a watchful eye on the goings on in the backyard from his window perch, it’s really pretty amusing to watch.
Not to bring anyone down, but in the week plus I’ve had her all I’ve gotten from her owners is one email asking how she’s doing. None of the kids are clamoring to come visit her or anything. I know when I was a kid if our dog were to go away somewhere for any length of time I would have been bugging my mom and dad to go for a visit.

abc questioned:

Nearly everyone i know has a german shepherd. When i walk my dog or take him out i see several german shepherds being walked.

I have newfoundland dog, and it is very rare that i have seen anyone having a landseer newfoundland.

So i’m just curious — what makes german shepherd so well loved and newfoundland kind of unpopular?

Where can I find a good home for my German Shepherd?

By milkbone Posted in Uncategorized / 10 Comments »
Sybil M questioned:

We have a 1 y.o female German Shepherd that is need of a excellent home. She is NOT excellent with other animals. She is very dominant. She is excellent with older kids (teens) she’s about 100 lbs but thinks she a small dog and plays rough. She is spayed and up to date on all shots and heartworm meds. She is VERY protective and loyal to her owners. But, due to a recent crisis in our family we aren’t able to give her the time or attention she deserves. We need a excellent home for her that is willing to work with her on her trained commands and give her LOTS of like and attention.

Can someone help?
Please know I don’t “want” to lose her because I believe in “forever” homes with pets. But, my son takes priority right now as he is disabled and has become emotionally unstable from being bullied at school and tried to take his life.
I live in Indiana and I have called/emailed the GSD rescue but still waiting on a call back.
Thanks for all the fantastic feedback.
I want to get more info from the gal that said she’s in Illinois breeding GSD/GRT Danes!

I would be willing to travel a bit to ensure she has a excellent home!
