Are there really two kinds of labrador retrievers? what kind of dog is this?

We rescued a dog about 4 months ago from a shelter and they weren’t sure what kind of dog it was. They knew he was mixed with lab but wasn’t sure if he was purebred. Now that he is growing (he’s about 1 year and 2 months) he looks a lot larger than a regular lab. I researched and it said something about there being two types of labs; English and American with the American labs being more lanky or something? Well here are some pictures of my dog? Do you reckon he is a purebred or mixed with something like a fantastic dane?

I have a purebred lab and yours looks like the real deal…Labs have lots of energy and when younger they tend to look kinda lanky. At about 3 years of age they start to mature.

American bred labs have longer legs, longer snouts, and tend to be lighter in build. English bred labs are shorter and thicker with more square heads. You’ll never know for sure, but the dog you have does pretty much look like a poorly-bred Labrador, not a mix.

I reckon he’s mixed wiht a small something. His face and eyes remind me of a German shorthair pointer. He’s very handsome. Congratulations.

I’ve had both types of labs, and this appears to be the English type. They are leaner. The American ones are the small stubby ones, lol.
Have fun with him, I like Labs

I reckon he’s purebred. At least his ears, fur and muzzle tell me so.

i have a dog named buddy who looks just like that; my dads friend found him tied to a tree in the woods during hunting season.
i have looked at a bunch of different types of dog to see what types of breeds buddy is and everyone in my family thinks buddy is a black lab and fantastic dane mix.

The English lines of Labs are not tall and lanky. The breed standard is: 21.5 to 23.5 tall, 55 to 70 lbs. for females.
22.5 to 24.5 tall, up to 85 lbs. for males.
The 2 Labs in my avatar pic are from english lines. The black female is 22″ and 62 lbs. The yellow boy is her son, 7 months ancient in the pic. He is a handsome boy.
Your Lab appears to be from the American lines. Longer nose, houndier looking ears, rat tail as opposed to an otter tail, taller and lankier.
Still a Lab.
