When is the Fertile mating time for a Golden Retriever?
By milkbone Posted in Uncategorized /
Athena questioned:
My Golden Retriever went into heat Monday, June18th, 2007. I was told that the fertile time to breed her would be between June 24th – 30th. The studs parents have heard that she would not be ready until about the 16th day which falls on July 5th. I just want to assure I am mating during the right days. Thank you!!!
I apoligize for not explaing further. I am not interested in breeding for money. My Female is 4 yrs ancient. I have looked into adopting another Golden but there aren’t any to be found. My Female has been checked for everything under the sun, she comes from brilliant blood lines and is AKC registered! If it helps everyone to sleep better, I plot on keeping a few of the puppies myself, and I already have families lined up for any additional available puppies. No one will become strays, this has been long and thought out.
I only was curious if I was missing something because the studs parents thought it was something different that what my Vet & Groomer advised me on. I hope this clears everything up for anyone else out there. Thank You!

Take her temperature everyday and map out when it is highest.
Dogs stay in heat somewhere between 3 and 21 days. I belive that she will be unreceptive until she is ready… plus, she can be mated multiple times….

If you have to question the question, you’re not a professional breeder. Please don’t breed your dog. Have her spayed. There are already too many pets without homes. Your dog should be a companion, not a money-maker.

KIt Kat is right in the day for the best time for her to be mated.
All Goldens will have a heat for about 21 to 22 days. No more the 2 matting is necessary and should be done 24 hours apart.
Mating multiple time is not necessary and can lead to pups that are days apart in age when whelped.
Please read up on everything you will need to know about careing for a pregnant Golden and whelping. You will need every bit of it.
I seriously doubt you have done any health testing that should have been done before hand. I only hope she is is at least 2 years ancient. If not than please rethink this mating.

La Buena Bruja is right. If you have to question the question, then you should not be breeding dogs.Have both dogs been tested for brucellosis, hip dysplaysia, and other defects? Are they up – to – date on their vaccinations? Are they on heartworm preventative? Do you know what to do if there is an emergency when your dog is ready to give birth? Are you financially able to buy premium puppy food? ( and lots of it,for both the Mom and pups, because the Mom will need up to 4 times the food she is eating now while she is nursing pups, and the pups will eat a LOT,and poop a LOT) Then there are puppy shots, worming, and vet check. There is no money to be made in breeding dogs unless you have the Westminster Dog Show Champion. Please reconsider breeding your dog.Go to your local shelters and see how many Goldens there are who need homes, how many there are on “death row.” Look online for Golden Retriever Rescues in your area, and see how many dogs need homes.Don’t add to the problem.Have your dog spayed, please. She will
be healthier and you’ll feel better knowing you’re not adding to the problem of pet overpopulation.

It seems to me, you are one of those back-yard breeders!
