I would check the newspaper. Or online. I searched for weeks for the perfect pup. And I found everything I wanted and more in the one I currently have. That breed is in the newspaper alot. Check it out, and question if u can see the pups before buying them.

    Cool
just don’t bring the pup home at this time of the year!
Give your g/f a “puppie card” and pick him/ her up after the all that “merry crap” is over.

A dog is not a excellent gift and most shelters and even some breeders will not sell to someone when the puppy is a gift because these dogs are more likely to end up in shelters. Make sure your girlfriend know how expensive a dog is. They need their set of vaccinations and deworming starting at 6 weeks of age, spaying/neutering at 6 months of age, food/toys/bed, and not to mention monthly heartworm and flea medication. Make sure your girlfriend realizes the first year of owning a puppy costs between $600-$800 and a dog is a huge responsibility (especially a puppy because they need constant attention and training). Yorkshire Terriers usually cost between $800-$1800 so be prepared to shed out some cash.

Check this website for a few local breeders:

Also, make sure you see the puppy and the parents (to make sure they are healthy) because there are numerous puppy scams going on right now.

First check the shelters/rescues. Don’t buy a dog from a petstore, or someone who can’t provide papers for the dog (backyard breeder).

Also, I would reconsider giving the dog as a Christmas gift. Puppies that are bought around that time usually aren’t socialized correctly because their owners have SO MUCH going on at that time that its hard to take care of them.

    try
    theres lots for adoption
never buy from a petstore or over the internet
Heres some for adoption, right now may be a better time to adopt because around the holidays shell be busy.
These pups are all so cute and your gf would like them:=&pet.Size=&pet.Sex=&location=CA=&lat=36.173729848188&long=-119.8244&preview=

Wow, that is a fantastic gift, your girlfriend is going to be so pleased. You should check your local classified ads, puppies are always for sale it just might take a while.

  18. Nandina Says: September 29th, 2008 at 9:03 am

DO NOT buy from a pet store – that’s even worse than buying from a backyard breeder. Pet stores get their dogs from puppy mills, which are “mass-production warehouses” that only exist to churn out as many puppies as cheaply as possible.

Contact your local rescue group and see if they can help.

Why not search for a Yorkie rescue? What a fantastic gift that would be…saving the dogs’ life and getting a dog your girlfriend wants! You may find most rescues will not adopt out as a gift. That is our policy but, we will allow another person to pay the adoption fee so that the dog is a gift to the person that will own the dog. We get in too many rescues that were given with the best of intentions as a gift and the gift receiver didn’t want a dog or didn’t want this kind of dog or just doesn’t want this dog. You will need to let your girlfriend pick out the dog she wants and you just pay for it. You could give her a card with a note in it that your gift will be paying for the Yorkie she chooses and have a rescue for her to look at their dogs and choose one.

If you are going to get your girlfriend a dog for Christmas, I would suggest waiting until the holiday is over before you bring it home. There is so much commotion around the holidays for people- it would be even worse for a dog in a new, weird environment. Plus, with all of the festivities, who has time to take the puppy out every hour, walk it, and give it attention? A excellent thought would be to get your girlfriend some things associated with the puppy on Christmas- a leash, dishes, toys, etc, to prepare her for the gift she is going to recieve.
And I agree with most people. Instead of getting your girlfriend an outlandishly expensive dog from a breeder, you should try shelters or rescue groups. Rescuing a dog would be more in the holiday spirit than nearly anything. Plus, a puppy is a very large responsibility. The thought of one seems very appealing, but the reality is less glamorous. Reckon about how much free time your girlfriend has- maybe an older dog would fit her lifestyle better? Either way, just make sure you reckon it through and that the choice you make is best for not just your girlfriend, but the dog as well.

Try the yorkshire terrier club of america.
I reckon that you should take her there to pick out the puppy. It needs to be her choice since it is going to be her dog. So when you choose on a breeder you both should go to check out the puppy and make sure that she likes the puppy.
First and foremost, you need to find a reputable breeder, pet stores buy their puppies from puppy mills where the dogs are locked up in small cages and don’t get a excellent life. Back yard breeders don’t care about genetic conditions or breeding to improve the breed.
The price for a pet puppy starts at $700+.
Find a reputable breeder who breeds to better the breed and checks for genetic conditions.

Shouldn’t make a promise you aren’t ready to keep. That will be about $1000+ from a excellent breeder. Also don’t fall for people calling them teacup yorkies…they are just runts that have more health problems later in life.

Do a web search for Yorkshire rescues in your area you might be able to find some young ones….if not do a web search for Yorkshire breeders in your area.

Most breeders will not sell their dogs around Christmas because of the high return rates. Christmas is the worst time for animal shelters and breed rescues because we get the bulk of our animals around that time of year. I would suggest looking into a Yorkie breed rescue and find a dog that you have in mind and instead of really getting her the dog get a picture and a puppy starter kit such as bowls, leash, collar, food, crate, ect and have her open it and then you can both go to pick up the pup. This way not only does she get a puppy for christmas but the puppy gets a home for christmas.

Well, don’t try a pet store as someone suggested… they are clearing houses for puppy mills and I have seen fifty pound Yorkies (registered) come from pet stores… Getting a puppy as a gift is usually not a fantastic thought. Your girlfriend needs to find a puppy she wants and you can offer to pay for it if that is what you want but selecting one for her is a disaster waiting to happen. People have different personalities and different things they like so you selecting a dog is a mistake and most responsible breeders won’t sell to a situation like that — they want to know the person that will be getting the dog and establish a raporte with them. There are a lot of people making puppies but if you go to an irresponsible back yard greeder from some internet or newspaper ad or from a pet store or puppy miller, you will get a crappy dog — just they way it is – those sorts are just making puppies for money and don’t care about health, temperament or structure so you get a sickly, nasty dog that won’t resemble the breed most of the time… Southern Cal has a number of all breed kennel clubs and even has Yorkshire Terrier breed specific clubs — do a search on Yorshire Terrier and find the parent club for the breed and they usually have the individual breed clubs listed and often have breeder referals. Now just because someone is refered to you doesn’t mean they are a excellent breeder but it is a starting list. Contact several excellent breeders in the area – they won’t usually have made to order puppies on hand as they aren’t McDonalds and the excellent breeders have waiting lists — this doesn’t mean that all their puppies are ‘show’ puppies but it does mean that they CARE about what they are breeding and have knowledge to breed it properly so you don’t end up with a Yorkie that looks like a hairy Dachshund or whatever. Have your girlfriend contact these breeders and you can go together and learn from them — she can learn about the breed and feel excellent about the puppy she will eventually get and that it hasn’t supported irresponsible greeders or mills. You/your girlfriend can also contact Yorkie rescue and see if they have any dogs available the might suit your girlfriend’s situation. Excellent luck and give her a necklace for Christmas, not a living creature…

try puppyfind.com. i bought 3 puppies from that site within the last 2 years (1 for myself a boxer, one for my sister a beagal and one for my stepmother a golden lab) all three buys were successfull and distress free. its a free site and you can check for thousands of puppies
    excellent luck

  29. Misa M Says: October 21st, 2008 at 5:04 am

The classifieds are full of irresponsible back yard breeders. These people can’t wait to make a quick buck and don’t care at all for the future health of your dog. If you simply must get one from a responsible breeder, get a health guarantee, meet the parents of the puppy, and discuss what the breeders’ policies are.
Though this is a Lab rescue site, it has a excellent guideline for those who feel they must give a dog as a Christmas present.
