Is 10 months old too young for a yorkshire terrier to be pregnant?
By milkbone Posted in #2 - Yorkshire Terrier /
Croatia chick questioned:
My 10 month ancient yorkshire terrier came into season 2 week ago and i caught her with another dog to it and now i was wondering if she could be pregnant because her boobs have got larger in the past week and are kinda hanging down,
and if she is pregnant is she too young and is it perilous cause she is only small and this dog was larger than her.

Please take her to the vet and get checked out. There could be complications…..

No, that is not too young. Female dogs usually go into heat for the first time around 6-8 months ancient. That is why you are supposed to get them fixed at 6 months ancient. If you witnessed her breeding, she is most likely pregnant because it happens very easily.
Bozema Says: May 21st, 2006 at 10:27 am
It is absolutely perilous. She is way too young, she is a toy dog, which have higher risks in pregnancy than other dogs, and she bred with a dog larger than her.
Get her to the vet now and have her spayed and terminate this pregnancy. Her life may depend on it.

yes, it could be potentially perilous. you should take her to the vet and get her checked out.

NO after 6 mos. they go into heat now for there first litter they might not make it but after 6 mos. they go into heat
walkinglady Says: May 25th, 2006 at 7:07 am
Yes, it is perilous. First because she’s much too young, as a puppy herself, to be giving birth to puppies. Secondly because the male was larger than her. But surely you know enough to get her to the vet for pre-natal exams. Talk to your vet about her anticipated problems whelping as well as caring for her health.

Yes she is WAY to young to be pregnant. I would certainly have your vet check her out. Maybe you could get her spayed and abort the pregnancy. Please be a responsible pet owner and get that small Yorkie spayed.

Yes, it is too young. Dogs should not be bred until they are two years ancient regardless of breed. Take her to the vet. Pregnancy at this age normally results in complications so you will need your vet to determine what risks are involved. After the pups are born get her spayed.
faith.trust*` Says: May 31st, 2006 at 6:09 am
Absolutely! She should be at least 2 years ancient before being bred. If the male was larger, there’s a risk she could need an emergency c-section or die giving birth. I recommend you contact the vet, bring her in, and see if she isn’t too far along and get her spayed. If it’s too late to get her spayed now, talk to the vet about potential problems and what you should do when it’s time for her to have the puppies.

yes it is too young… i know sometimes it happens, but for the dogs health, especially if the other dog is a much larger breed it could hurt or even kill her..
go to the vet now,, have her checked out,, and it may cost more but dogs can be spayed in the beginning of a pregnancy…better to do it now if it has only been a few weeks, then to wait, and watch her try to pass pups that are too large and ends up suffering and dying because of it…

yes 10 months is to young. also her being a smaller breed makes it even harder. yorkies normally have 1 or 2 pups maybe 3 in a litter. how huge was this other dog? i would be very concerned. also if you had no plans for breeding her why hasnt she been spade yet? better yet why wasnt she protected shall i say from other dogs while in heat?

no but it is too young for her to be pregnant. shame on you
Chihuahua ?r Says: June 8th, 2006 at 2:14 pm
YES THIS IS Terrible! A dog should be 2 yrs.+ before breeding. You should get her spayed right now before it is too late. If the dog was larger, it could result in a c-section (2000 dollars). Best of luckl!
HarleyQuine Says: June 10th, 2006 at 4:36 am
It’s not too young for her to be pregnant, if she comes into season – she can get pregnant. Don’t want to sound like a troll or anything but you really should have been more careful with such a young dog in heat, she’s not ready to be a mama, get her to the vet and he’ll tell you whether she is or not, then after the pup’s are born (or before) I’d recommend getting her fixed so this won’t happen again.
doxie Says: June 12th, 2006 at 2:16 pm
She is not too young to get pregnant but way to young to be pregnant. I would have her check by the vet to see if and what complications could be involved. I would also have her spayed.

OMG 10 months ancient? I myself do not Belive in Breeding. But I can tell u that 10 months ancient is so young.Has she even had her 2nd heat cycle? She is still a pupppy. Why would u allow her to get pregnant? Her lil frame is still growing and now she has puppies growing inside her.Total irresponsible on ur part.U caught her?Shouldnt she be on a leash or in a fence?Yes It can be very perilous for any dog or cat to be pregnant,But at 10 months ancient,YES! Please take her to a vet and do not rely on the comments u will recieve here.Fantastic ppl on here But she needs to be seeen by a vet.And please have her spayed. I rescue and its ashame that at her age she will be a mommy.Once these pups are born,SPAY please. We have enough of dogs cats ect in shelters that are place to sleeep each day, because they cant find loving homes. And millions in rescue homes across america, that are waiting for a home.No matter what breeed U want, U can find it in a shelter or a rescue home.Im rambling and getting annoyed, so yeah ,let me just say VET!!!!!

Here is a few things and honestly i don’t want to be rude but I’m giving advice
1. You should of gotten her spayed in the first place if you had no intention of breeding the dog. This just contributes to more unhealthy unwanted puppies in shelters.
2. Dogs don’t have “boobs” if you don’t know proper terminology then you don’t know enough about dogs to raise puppies and to take a dog through it’s pregnancy.
3. Your dog is in danger right now because you are an amateur and like you said the dog that she amted with is larger.
4. There is still time for your dog to abort the puppies. Get your dog to the vet and find out aout this, at this time get an appointment to get your dog spayed. Don’t contribute to the overcroweding of shelters please.
Hope I could help!

10 month dog is the equivalent to a 10 or 12 year ancient girl being pregnant. yes she is WAY too young, and yes it could cause her serious health problems. get her spayed as soon as possible and you wont have to worry about it any more
julianpresley Says: June 18th, 2006 at 8:37 pm
Well – it sounds like your baby is indeed pregnant or she is having a fake pregnancy. During a fake pregnancy the female’s body and hormones mimic those actions of a female’s body who really IS pregnant. It can happen with young female dogs who have recently come into heat – especially on first heat cycles. Either way, mammary develoment should be anticipated in both instances. —If she is pregnant, yes, this is too young. It is my belief that there is no need to purposfully breed any animal or to not spay/neuter, but that is not the issue at hand. Having a Yorkie raises several concerns when you are speaking of pregnancy, espcially at this young age/size. They are very prone to hypoglycemia, pre/eclampsia, low calcium and whelping difficulties. Gestation is typically about 62 days and if you are already seeing mammary development – and also considering the larger size of the fathering dog, you need to take her in for an ultrasound to see if any puppies can be identified. Depending on how long it has been since this occured – xrays might not show any visible signs of development yet. If this very recently happened, then I would reccomend making an appointment to have her spayed and let them know she is possibly pregnant and if so, then they will abort the pregnany. I reckon considering how many unwanted animals there are being euthanized daily and also taking the size of the father into consideration, this would be the best choice. At this point, assuming the hurt is done, you have to make the right choice for your baby and possibly your wallet. Any of the problems I listed earlier that Yorkies/small breed females are very prone to are not cheap to get under control. Hope this helps! Let me know if you may need anything further. Excellent Luck!!

I am not going to be mean like some of the others, but it took me three tries to write this nicely.
First, get your girl to the vet. Yorkies as well as other small breeds DO have a hard time whelping.
Second, since the male was larger than she is, the puppies are going to be larger than a standard Yorkie pup, and can therefore tear her uterus. This will cause her and the pups to die.
Third, I would recommend, even though it sounds cruel, to get her fixed and the pregnancy aborted. The reason I am saying this is that it is possibly the only way she will survive this.
Fourth, excellent luck. I know that you will make the right choice.

yes she is far too young. She is not done maturing. A male that was larger than her also poses a hazard. If you allow her to carry the pregnancy, be prepared for a cecarian, which can cost $1,000- 2,000 and up!
Its not to late to spay her an abort the puppies.. it would be much safer and healthier to do so.

OMG YES she is too young!! Dogs should never be breed under 2 years ancient!!!

Her enlarged teats don’t mean she’s pregnant, per se, but she could very easily be pregnant. She’s too young to be a excellent mom, she’s not emotionally or physically mature. Get her to a vet and see if you can have her spayed.

Breeding risks for females
Before you breed your female there is a risk of death from breeding your female .
So if your dog is a wonderful pet you may like it to much to risk loosing her then do not breed
Here is a list of just a few complications that can cause your female to die if bred.
Can cause death
hemorrhage
uterus rupture
retained puppy or placenta
mastitis {infection in breasts }
Uterine infection Pyometria.
milk fever .
shock
death from reaction to sedative during c- sec
Your female can also get canine Venereal diseases, so never breed to a male dog who has not had a vet checked for breeding soundness and diseases
Here are some canine Venereal diseases
Canine Herpes
Canine transmissible venereal tumor (CTVT), TVT is most commonly seen in sexually active dogs
Brucellosis is a disease that is usually spread by sexual intercourse or vaginal excretions.

do you realize now why we all say “SPAY” ?
Angel Says: June 27th, 2006 at 1:13 am
She’s way too young, to be pregnant! It would be very perilous for her, because she’s still a baby, and not fully developed yet! Small breeds, tend to have major complications during delivery, because the puppies may be too huge for her to pass, or they can get stuck in the birth canal. Most of the time, they need C-Sections, to remove the puppies and save their lives. If she does have complications and you don’t take immediate action, or don’t know exactly what you need to do, to help help her and the puppies, you can lose her and the puppies. Females should never be bred with a dog that’s larger than them. If your Yorkie was bred with a dog larger than her, like you say she was, I can nearly guarantee you, she’s going to have a very hard time, delivering those puppies, and pulling through this trauma! Please, for the sake of your dog, take her to the vet immediately, and see what they reckon you should do, to prevent losing her. Please have your puppy fixed, to avoid this from happening in the future!
