there is no such thing as golden labrador, you are an idiot, there are only yellow labs, chocolate labs, and black labs

but, there is such thing as a golden retriever…

There is no such thing as a golden labrador retriever – the golden retriever is a really separate breed. There are three colors of labs – yellow, black and chocolate. They are all the same breed – just differ in color expression in their coats – and litters may be born with all three colors in them. There is no other difference in intelligence, temperament or personality.

the two colors recognized by akc are yellow, black and chocolate. some breeders will try to sell them as white, blonde, etc. its just a variation of the three basic colors

as stated previously, get the color you like the most. labs make fantastic pets. the myths surrounding the colors are just that. some dogs are bred for hunting, some for show, and some for pets. question about the parents and see what they are used for.

my chocolate lab comes from a show line, but i only have her as a pet. she is wonderful.

There are only three colors for Labrador Retrievers that are recognized by the AKC – Black, Chocolate, and Yellow. Color doesn’t have to do with intelligence. The difference is only the color of the coat. I, personally, like all three. In my opinion, they’re all gorgeous.

Please do not call a yellow Lab a “golden” as that refers to the Golden Retreiver. As one who raised & trained Labs for over 20 yrs, I believe the black Labs to be the simplest to train & hunt. As much as I like the looks of the Choc Lab I’m not that impressed with their field abilities, but as for pet quality they are the clowns of the breed. I would rate the yellow Lab @ a very close 2nd to the blacks.

well, the chocolate ones tend to be more hyper yet focused…the yellow ones might be a slight bit smarter…the black ones are sometimes more reserved and cool but also intelligent…i would suggest getting a black lab because there are a lot of out there that are unadopted because of BBD syndrom or “huge black dog” people tend to be worried of bbd’s because you cant tell there facial expressions and people sometimes associate black fur with rottweillers…but they are sweet and sociable i assure you!

in labrador retrievers it doesnt matter what colour they are when it come’s to intelligence. whether they be yellow, black or chocolate (orignally called liver). But not all lab’s are intelligent as a lot of people reckon. they do need training and a lot do respond to training very quickly.
then again you could end up like me and have a very rully nutty lab. you do get the occasional naughty lab. (read marly and me).
and again they could be any colour lab, mine is a black.
also i dont have a fav colour lab. they are all as gorgeous as each other…though i prefer border collies.

All that differs is a couple of genes, chocolate Labradors have the dilute form of the pigment gene that makes them lighter than the black ones. Yellow Labradors have either black or chocolate pigment genes, but have a different form of a second gene that causes the pigment colour to appear (or not) in the coat, the pigment still appears in their nose and lips. All three colours could appear in the same litter and it seems unlikely that this would affect their intelligence or behaviour. I prefer the black ones myself, our vet said the black ones are longer lived but since two of ours died prematurely from cancer I don’t reckon it is right.
All would make a very nice pet.

No differeence in intelligence levels – perhaps, as a lady, you should choose whichever colour is simpler to accessorize with :-)

You cannot beat a labrador for loyalty and obedience – but should bear in mind that they do need a lot of exercise so youi will get plenty of exercise yourself if you get one

black and yellow are the best because hocolate i the recessive gene, and they tend to have health issues. Labs are the sweetest, i have 2!!

Labs are wonderful. I have a yellow lab and shes going to be 3 in Dec. They do need a lot of exersise and delight in playing. They can take a couple of years to cool down, cause they are a small hyper the first couple of years. They are smart and like to learn new things.Get a excellent trainer and remember they will like you forever. Mine learned to sit and lay at 3 mo.But she can be a small like a kid at times stealing stuff and playing keep away. Just be consistant with their training and they will learn a lot. Excellent Luck!!

Ive heard that choccies are a bit more hyperactive than yellows or blacks. But I reckon each dog is individual and will also learn a bit from you too, so if you’re a hyper bug your dog will likely be too.

I personally prefer yellows, because you can see their eyes really clearly and they have the most adorable brown, expressionate eyes that you can just spend all day looking at. below is a link that hopefully you can see my boys. They are now nearly 5 months ancient and utterly utterly fab. PS the lab forum is a fantastic place for info on this brilliant breed.

Every black Labrador will tell you that any other colour is inferior, and from my experience of Black Labradors ( always females) they are right. You won’t find a better dog they are fabulous friends.

    No difference at all.
I have a Choccie lab called Tetley who is clever, simple going, child friendly, other dog friendly and a total clown….I wouldn’t be without him!!!!!
Its all down to personal preference but they are wonderful !!!

i have a black lab, and i dont reckon colour makes a differnce, i know golden labs hair stand out more on clothes,

I read in a recent article in dogs today magazine that there had been a study undertaken in america to see whether there was any difference in the coat colours. They found with there research that yellow labs tend to be more aggresive, blacks second most aggresive and chocolates last. It came as quite a shock to most people as alot of people portay black dogs as being more aggresive or prone to aggression. Obviously this doesn’t mean that getting a yellow lab will result in owning an aggresive dog, it’s the way you train a dog that determines it’s future personality.

there is also a silver or grey labradors but they are very rare

as for the colors and intelligence there is no connection

i have a yellow lab its very intelligent likes to play cares for small kids and babies a lot like a person lol my lab is the shit so i pick the yellow ones

If you really read up on the St Johns Dog (for that is what you are talking about!) the original right colour is Black. The books say that as the colours lighten through chocolate to yellow (not ‘golden’ I’m worried) then more faults are likely to develop healthwise. I have not found this to be right having worked all colours of Lab.

  22. lisa c Says: December 9th, 2006 at 10:57 pm

Colors do not make a difference in intellegence. Labs are very smart and easily trained. All labs have the tendenceny to be hyper active. I believe both of these factors are determined by the breeding and training. If they are well bred and trained properly then they are all smart.

I personally like chocolates and yellows. I don’t care for the black but this like is only based on color nothing else. I breed chocolates and yellows for hunting (field), show and just for companion pets. They are all fantastic dogs. I have had some of my pups win titles and others are just fantastic family dogs.

  23. Denise Says: December 13th, 2006 at 8:13 am

All labradors are gorgeous, they stay pups till about two years of age but as for colour just choose which colour you like best all labs are fun.

  24. starrgirl94 Says: December 16th, 2006 at 3:09 pm

I am going to say Chocolate are better because I have one but all labradors are lovely, friendly dogs. They make brilliant family pets and I would reccomend the breed to anyone looking for a dog.

  25. shirley v Says: December 19th, 2006 at 7:13 am

colour is not vital they are lovely dogs

  26. brandy Says: December 20th, 2006 at 11:36 am

Golden and black Retrievers are a breed on their own. Gorgeous dogs to have if you don’t mind the grooming, particularly if you live near water as they like to swim. I would always choose a Golden Retriever.

Labradors have a small smooth coat and colour is up to your own choice. They also like the water.

  27. cristina b Says: December 21st, 2006 at 8:31 pm

No difference in labs acording to their colour, every dog is different and there fore have their own characters you can’t pick a colour lab and say on they will be cool cos it won’t happen. As someone else has said there is no such thing as a ‘golden’ lab its Black, chocolate and yellow.
