My 1 year old male golden retriever still doesn’t lift up his leg to pee?

By milkbone Posted in Uncategorized /
ellharp questioned:

Is it normal if my 1 year ancient male golden retriever still squats to pee? Or should all male dogs pee with their leg up even as a puppy?

    It’s not abnormal.
Some male dogs do not start to lift their leg until they are 2+ years of age and some male dogs never lift their leg up- it all depends on the individual dog.

My 4 yr ancient black lab only lifts his leg occasionally, he normally squats. He’s bone idle.

Has he been neutered. He won’t after being neutered unless he learns to from watching another male dog.

As long as he isn’t making a mess on himself, it isn’t any huge deal as long as urinating does not cause him any pain or difficulties. If you are very concerned, have a vet check it out; but, my neighbour has a two year ancient male German Shepard and it has never lifted its leg to urinate and it is healthy, so this is probably not the end of the world. Use your best judgement as a dog owner to judge the seriousness of the problem and go with your instinct.

My dog is 2 and just recently started lifting his leg, but
my German shepherd is 11 and he’ll do it both ways.
I guess dogs just do it whatever way they want.

That is the way the pee pee puddles. Don’t worry about it.

My one male labrador did the same thing. He wasn’t fixed and he always squatted. One day, he just lifted a leg and started peeing.
It all depends on when their instincts kick in. It’s a lot like puberty. It comes when it comes.
My other male dog, a chessie, still squats and he is nearly 2 years ancient.
Again, it depends on the dog.

If you have female dogs he may have picked it up from them. My female chihuahua tries to lift her leg up to pee (like a male) since she learned it from my aunt’s male dogs when she was a puppy.

my dog had to see another dog to do it himself. now he doesnt stop. he still squats sometimes.
they normally start lifting their legs at 2 yrs ancient, when they’re “mature”.
one of my older dogs used to squat constantly. it depends on the dog i guess.

If he was neutered before he started to get instinct to lift his leg, then he never will do it.

I got my dog fixed at a year ancient. He rarely did it before, he still does it from time to time.

Is your dog neutered? That will often stop him from lifting his leg. I had a golden that never once lifted his leg, and he was neutered.

It’s okay even if he never lifts his leg; you should be thankful for it!

I’ve noticed that leg hiking seems to be a learned habit. Case in point..my aunt had a year ancient yellow lab who had never hiked his leg..then they adopted an 3 year ancient german shepherd who DID hike his leg…after about two weeks (BOTH were neutered by the way..the lab being neutered before the shepherd came in and the shepherd being already neutered) the lab started hiking his leg eventhough he’d never done it.

Personally i would rather my boy NOT learn to hike a leg!!

It is normal. Some dogs squat, even when adults. Others lift their leg. Sometimes, even female dogs go to the bathroom with their leg up! I have a male, 3 year ancient cocker spaniel who squats, and a male, 5 year ancient yorkie who lifts his leg. Smaller dogs seem to like *lifting their leg*!

My male never lifted his leg. He never saw another male lift their leg. Then in one of my classes, the german shepherd who was in season left and when I took him out of his kennel, he walked over to the pole, and lifted his leg!

If a male dog starts lifting his leg, then he starts marking. So don’t rush it.

You have nothing to worry about. My golden didn’t completely start to lift his leg until he was about two… Before that he squatted.
